Scottish Squash - a great sport needs our help

In the past 2 weeks officials from Scottish Squash have been presenting information on the future of squash, what it means for the sport and clubs.

First of all Squash hopes to get voted into the 2020 Olympics, but in order to do so, it needs to have a lot more people playing, and it has to be much more TV friendly. If it does get in, then it will make a huge difference to the sport, and all clubs and players as funding an sponsorship will be much more likely.

To get people playing, they need to get people started" hitting a ball against a wall!"  The strategy is to market the sport to the masses who "just want to get fit", and racketball hits the target. The are hoing to market the game as Rcaketball3s and Racketball 2s.

The also are going to have racketwall, so that anybody can start to play a game against a friend by having a racketwall and court marked out in many venues, inside and out!

The also hope to have a racketwall which can be rolled out and put in the middle of a badminton court which will allow lots of halls to be used by lots of players.

Finally, watch out in the TV and press as Scottish Squash trys to get other professional sportsmen and women playing racketball/wall!   They will also offer free sessions around the country to encourage people to come along and enjoy our sport.

All clubs were encouraged to help and offer free sessions, reach out to other sports and communities  e.g. Scouts, Brownies, Firemen, Police, Taxi drivers!

If your interested let me or Dave know!

Congratulations to Juniors at the Nationals

Last weekend saw a number of junior members, family and supporters go up to the Scottish Junior Nationals at ARSC in Aberdeen. All the juniors played great squash and did the club proud at the weekend. The players who took part were Clare and Sean Gadsby, Rory and Greig Stewart, Rebecca McKerchar, Maddie and Jack Orr. Susan Stewart, Susan Anderson, Alison Gadsby and Gillian Crawford all made the trip and supported the kids over the two days.

That man Greig Stewart for the second week running made the headlines, beating Callum Johnston (Scottish Academy and number one seed?) 3-1 in the final. Greig squeezed past Callum in the final 12/10 7/11 11/7 11/5.

In the BU15 Greig’s brother Rory Stewart (CHSC) could not emulate his brother’s performance in the final as he was constantly under pressure from No 2 seed James Wilson (WC); James eventually taking the title 11/9 11/4 3/11 7/11 11/5. The GU15 saw Kirsty Lobban (ITSC) take the title for the second year in a row, defeating Claire Gadsby (CHSC) 11/7 11/7 11/3.

Unseeded Alexander Ralston (LIN) made the final of the BU13 where he faced the talented Richard Hollins (ASV) who had a tough semi-final against Adam Reid (GA). Richard's movement and shot play proved too much for Alexander in the end Richard winning in straight games 11/3 11/4 11/4. The GU13 title was claimed by Katie Gregson-Macleod (ITSC), defeating Maddie Orr (CHSC) in 5 games, 12/10 8/11 6/11 11/8 11/4.  Jack also palyed some great matches finishing  in third spot in the boys under 11.

A great set of results from our players.Well done all players and coaches!

Susan and Greig are 2011 Club Champions

On "club finals night" at the Crieff Hydro the mens and ladies championships and plates were held.

First up was Paul Keith against Malky Orr in the Mens Plate. Paul played like a demon, while Malky struggled after eating 2 MacDonalds just earlier! Paul came out the winner 3-0, although all the games were very close.

Next on was young Rebecca McKerchar from Perth, (another of the Crieff junior Scotland players ) against the more experienced Sheena Crawford. The first game proved decisive with Rebecca edging out Sheena in a game full of good ralleys and shots. The next two games were also won by Rebecca who was controlling the tee and hitting powerfull drives. The final score was 3-0 to Rebecca.

The first of championship mactches was the ladies, with both top seeds - Susan Anderson and Sabine MacKenzie - winning through tough semi-finals against Clare Gadsby and Gillian Crawford. A top class match was played by both with Susan retaining her crown again in a 3-0 win. In a close match Susan won the first game 9-4 using a wide variety of shots. However, the second game saw the energetic, hard hitting Sabine take a 6-2 lead before Susan clawed her way back to take the game 9-6.. She eventually won that game 9-6, and edged out Sabine in a thrilling tie- break 10-8 in the third.

The last final saw Dave Moran, the 2009 and 2010 club champion take on the young pretender 16 year old Greig Stewart in the mens final. In a match lasting an hour Greig proved too strong for Dave, wiinning 3-1. This was a match in which both played top class squash. Congratulations to Greig on winning what should be the first of many club championships.

Many thanks to all competitors and those undertaking refereeing duties during the events.

Pictures and scores will be added in the near future.
